Article: 99% of products don’t contain Hoodia

Surprised? Shocked? Appalled?

south african hoodiaFollowing extensive research into over 100 products, we were only able to find 1 product that contained 100% unaltered, authentic Hoodia Gordonii: UniqueHoodia.

It was remarkable to sift through so many supplements – all claiming to be 100% authentic Hoodia Gordonii – to find just 1 that matched all our criteria.

So when Alkemist Pharmaceuticals made their statement earlier this year that this figure was 80%, they were not wrong when they further predicted that there were many more outside the radar making the same claims.

The question is: how can you tell?

Some articles may tell you that there are 7 different ways to test a hoodia supplement, but to truly know what you are getting there are 11 ways you can test it. Just 11 simple questions can wean out the real from the fake and offer your body the genuine article.

Question 1: Does it have the laboratory testing?

A product either contains hoodia gordonii or it doesn’t. Simple.

And a sure fire way to find out is through independent laboratory testing. Not their own specialist team. Not some group of unheard-of  experts. But through a reputable company.

Now one of the best companies available is Alkemist Pharmaceuticals. Why? Because they have got the latest in scientific procedures and have got a strong reputation within the weight loss industry for having the best testing lab.

Their reputation is undisputable and any hoodia company who has used them, will not hide this fact – that is unless their product failed the test of course!

Saying that, there are other companies whose reputations are just as credible: CNL.

Many companies may opt for just Alkemist Pharmaceuticals, but UniqueHoodia have gone one step further and have got both. Alkemist Pharmaceuticals AND CNL.

Why? To improve the credibility of their product, and to show their customers that their Hoodia supplement has passed more than one, but two tests.

Question 2: Is it 100% Hoodia Gordonii?

uniquehoodiaThis may look like a silly question, but it will probably be the most important question you’ll ever ask yourself when it comes to this product.

You see, real Hoodia Gordonii is rare. Scarce.

After many years of over harvesting and demand, it can now only be naturally found in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. Not China or Texas as some websites will lead you to believe, but Southern Africa.

Now this is not disputing that Hoodia Gordonii is grown in these locations. They are. But their Hoodia supplements will contain nothing of the intensity, nor the effectiveness of authentically grown South African Hoodia Gordonii.

The soil can make all the difference

This is why we recommend that you read the label, check for fillers/preservatives, and read the ingredients list.

Many companies - in a bid to cut corners and reduce costs - will use fillers, caffeine and inactive parts of the Hoodia Gordonii plant to limit how much of the core of the Hoodia Gordonii plant they use.

And by doing so, this enables them to do two things. One, make the genuine claim that their supplement contains authentic Hoodia Gordonii (after all, the amount may be minimal but they are essentially not lying) and two, still charge you the full price for it.

The problem is checking the ingredient lists is not enough. Yes, we know this may sound like a contradiction, but it’s true. You need more than a list to ascertain which have got the fillers and which haven’t.

You need laboratory testing. Which is where companies such as Alkemist Pharmaceuticals and CNL come in. Through their extensive clinical trails they can verify whether or not these supplements contain 100% Hoodia Gordonii.

Question 3: How much Hoodia Gordonii does each capsule contain?

According to recent studies, consumers need to take anywhere between 2,250-3,000mg of Hoodia per day to effectively suppress their appetite.

Now considering that most companies suggest you should take 3-4 of their capsules per day it would make sense that each capsule contains at least 400mg of genuine Hoodia Gordonii. The more Hoodia Gordonii there is per capsule, the more promising the results.

Yet despite these figures, Alkemist Pharmaceuticals discovered that the average Hoodia supplement only contained 25mg. A sixteenth of what you really need.

So what do you do?

There has been much controversy surrounding this figure and much confusion with it.

In CBS’s 60 minute report in 2004, they questioned the authenticity of pills that contained only 0.01%-0.1% of the active molecule P57.

In their review they believed it was impossible for pills to have this figure and still be genuine.

They are wrong.

Take a part the entire Hoodia Gordonii plant, and you’ll only find the active ingredient within the core. Not its leaves. Not its stem. But the actual core of the plant.

Yet within the core itself, there are many other active molecules at work that have nothing to do with appetite suppression. Only P57 has this unique quality.

So when you break this information down, it is highly plausible that 0.1% is accurate. All that truly matters is that ‘said’ companies use solely the core of the plant. Nothing else.

Thipure hoodia gordoniis is where many of our test subjects slipped up. Aside from containing ingredients other than the core of the plant, they contained as little as 25mg of Hoodia Gordonii.

Only UniqueHoodia met this criterion.

Question 4: Is there any other ingredients?

Sounds a simple enough question, yet it is surprising how many of us actually get duped by it.

And we know. We may have just said extra ingredients equal a fake product, but this is not completely true. There are the capsules themselves to consider. If you find gelatib on its ingredients label then that is okay, but find anything else such as caffeine and that is a complete no, no.

Question 5: Know your Hoodia varieties

Hoodia Gordonii may look like a cactus but it is actually classified as a succulent. A succulent that has a family of over 13 varieties.

This is where the dupe gets more complicated.

There may be 13 types of Hoodia, but only Hoodia Gordonii contains the P57 molecule that is renowned for suppressing your appetite. No other Hoodia plant contains it, yet the number of supplements that contain the wrong Hoodia plant is incredible.

And their cover-up is pretty simple too. Read the word Hoodia, and most consumers we interviewed automatically thought this was an abbreviation of Hoodia Gordonii.

But read only ‘Hoodia’ on the label, and this vagueness is probably a sign that their supplement is made from either multiple Hoodia plants or a different one altogether.

More astounding was the fact that many companies don’t even realise they are using the wrong Hoodia.

Following a study by Alkemist Pharmaceuticals, they discovered of the 80% they found to be fake; the majority of these companies honestly thought they had real Hoodia Gordonii. They had been duped too.

This might explain why these companies willing submitted their supplements to be tested in the first place.

Because who would willingly let their products be recognised as a fake? No one we know.

Question 6: How are the supplements processed?

In other words – which part of the Hoodia Gordonii plant have they used?

Sounds fairly straight forward wouldn’t you agree – especially considering that since 2006, the FDA has required that all Hoodia sellers specify on their labels which part of the Hoodia Gordonii plant they have used – but it isn’t.

Many companies still resort to using the whole of the Hoodia Gordonii plant such as its leaves, flowers and roots, as it is cheaper.

This would be great if the whole of the plant contained the active ingredient for suppressing your appetite, but this is simply not the case. Only the aerial stem, the core of the Hoodia Gordonii plant has P57.

So check the label. If there is even a hint of another ingredient, they are either violating the agreement or they don’t use authentic Hoodia Gordonii.

Take UniqueHoodia for example. Their entire ingredients list is openly advertised both on their site and on their packaging. Why? To allow their customers to compare their laboratory testing to their ingredients and recognise that their supplement is real.

Question 7: What is the potency of the supplement?

This is where the debate gets interesting. What can determine the potency of the plant?

Simple. The active levels of P57 in your hoodia supplements. But it is not that simple.

They generally range between 0.1%- 0.45%, but as we previously discussed the majority of supplements probably only contain 0.1%. So which one is right?

Both. If you can find a supplement that contains a higher potency of P57 than 0.1% then great, but if it doesn’t… it doesn’t matter.

Remember, P57 is not the only active ingredient within the core of the Hoodia Gordonii plant. No. There are many more hidden molecules within - which have got nothing to do with appetite suppression -  and which cannot be isolated.

So you have got to ask yourself this? If the Kalahari Bushmen managed to suppress their appetites simply be eating the core of the plant for hundreds of years. No added science or capsules, but just the core itself. Then as long as your supplements are only made from the aerial stem of the Hoodia Gordonii plant, then your appetite should be effectively suppressed too.

Either way, 0.1% or 0.45%, all sites should display results from a test called High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) which is the best way to reveal the true potency of your supplements.

Question 8: Is the deal too good to be true?

hoodia reviewThrough a combination of high demands; a shortage of stocks and protection procedures in place to prevent over-exportation (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) it is easy to see why real Hoodia Gordonii costs between $30-$60 to buy for just one months supply. It is scarce.

Yet, search the internet and you’ll find countless free trials: buy one get one free deals or package offers for just $20 or less.

They are all fake.

With the above mentioned restrictions in place no company would willingly sell their Hoodia Gordonii supplement at a reduced price when they would have had to undergo all these procedures in order to just receive the plant. Hoodia Gordonii is expensive for a reason.

Take UniqueHoodia for example. They have had to recently reduce their package offers to a maximum of 6 months per sale, per person, per day. Why? To enable them to match the demand and ensure all their customers have equal chance of investing in their supplement.

So unless a company is genuinely putting their product on sale for a ‘limited time only’ promotion, you should buy with extreme caution.

If they are cheap, they are cheap for a reason.

Question 9: Look for a CITES Certificate

Real Hoodia Gordonii can only be exported from South Africa and Namibia if they have a CITES certificate. And once it is exported, it must remain with the supply until it arrives.

Sounds simple so far? CITES certificates are not as straight forward as they sound.

One of the many confusions consumers make, is believing that the CITES certificate will tell them if their supplement is genuine Hoodia Gordonii or not. In basic terms… it does.

A genuine CITES certificate means it was legally exported out of South Africa. But the actual quantity of Hoodia used in your supplement? It cannot tell you.

Here are a few quick pointers to remember when looking over a CITES certificate:

Lastly, is it hard to read? A website may claim they have got genuine Hoodia Gordonii, and they may have even put a CITES certificate on their website, but if the writing is blurred or some areas are blacked out, the certificate is fake.

Take for example the CITES certificate on UniqueHoodia. Clear, concise and readily available – consumers are free to view it as many times as they want.

Question 10: Is the CITES certificate from the US?

Confused? We’ll explain.

As of March 2006, the US Department of Wildlife sent all Hoodia Sellers a letter stating that they too must obtain a CITES certificate in order to export their supplement from the US.

Complicated? We think so. Yet it is another clever way for checking to see if your hoodia supplement… is the real deal.

If these companies don’t supply these certificates, they are either violating these regulations or… they are not using authentic Hoodia Gordonii in their supplement.

So check for a US CITES certificate too, and get double the guarantee.

Question 11: Is it a consumer website?

where to buy hoodiaType ‘Hoodia’ into Google, and you’ll find countless expert websites or consumer advocacy websites recommending ‘DietHoodia’ as the #1 Hoodia supplement available.

They will all claim to have done extensive testing using a team of Hoodia experts, yet they will all also conveniently say that the very same products they are selling are the most effective ones.

Very convenient, and convenient for a reason. Why? Because they are hoodia sellers in disguise.

In essence they are nothing more than sales websites, fronting as the genuine article in order to promote their own product.

This is not to say no promotion is a good thing. The way UniqueHoodia have confronted this problem is to provide their customers with one, all their medical backing and laboratory testing, and two their media coverage.

UniqueHoodia is nationally recognised by the BBC, CNS and Hello Magazine as being a genuine appetite suppressant supplement

Offer any of these questions to any Hoodia Gordonii supplement, and you will find that the majority of them: cannot even answer half.

So if you are searching for unaltered, authentic Hoodia Gordonii we recommend UniqueHoodia.
