And the CITES certificate is just one of their many ways of preserving it. It is an international agreement between governments that regulates the use and export of Hoodia across the whole of the globe.

And we have to say, these restrictions are strict. Once companies obtain a CITES certificate - giving them permission to export Hoodia from South Africa - they must do it in 6 months. If they wait beyond this 6 months barrier, then they must reapply again.

Talk about inconvenient.

But this is not the worst of it. Once the Hoodia is exported the certificate must remain with the shipment until it arrives. So if it gets lost, they have got a problem, especially if they are planning to sell.

So what is a CITES certificate we hear you ask? A very fiddly document that can create problems as well as solve them.

And if you are unable to read them, well... the news just gets better and better.

You see there is a lot more to this certificate than meets the eye.

FACT 1: The date shown on the CITES only reflects when it was issued.

Remember companies have 6 months to export the plant from South Africa. 6 months before it could even leave the port.

Now consider that for a moment and it presents a problem. And one many consumers continually get wrong.

You see, when many people see this 6 month old date on the certificate, they automatically think it is either a fake or invalid. This is not true.

There could be many reasons why you are seeing a 6 month old certificate on your Hoodia supplement website. One they have been slow with shipping it out and bringing it to the market or two, their shipment was large and would have taken months to export.

Now if it is the latter, you've got even bigger problems. Why? Because you could be looking at a certificate date that is over 1 years old, but is still valid.

This just goes on to prove the point that the date on the certificate actually doesn’t mean a thing. Sure, if you spot one from 3 years ago, you are allowed to be suspicious. But a year? That is nothing.

FACT 2: The company name shown on the CITES certificate isn't always the company who is selling it to you

What you are actually seeing on the certificate is the exporter’s name.

Now usually these companies are a raw materials supplier. They are not interested in Hoodia for its weight loss qualities. No. What they are really interested in is selling their supplies to supplement companies who will then use the Hoodia to make the capsule you see before you.

If anything you should be more concerned if you DO see the websites name on the certificate. Why? Because only a handful of companies are allowed to be issued with a CITES certificate. It is much cheaper for companies to buy genuine Hoodia through a raw materials supplier. And less paper work too, when you consider how much hard work it is to get a CITES certificate in the first place.

FACT 3: A CITES certificate doesn't prove how much Hoodia is used in the making of the supplement

This is where it gets tricky. Hoodia is not regulated. There are no rules stating how much a company must supply in their capsules. Nor a rule that they must declare it.

They have got complete and utter leeway on how much Hoodia they use, which means you could be getting anything.

Not very inspiring is it?
